Mazda Infotainment Software Drives Hacks
March 7, 2025
Most drivers love their infotainment systems. The truckload of functions they provide can make trips both long and short easier and more fun to do. But what happens when the software running the infotainment system is hackable? Owners of certain Mazda’s are finding that out—some before and some after it’s too late.
Just a few of the popular functions infotainment systems provide include storing information from a smartphone, AI-enabled voice recognition, audio and video streaming, touchscreen display, and of course, navigation. It’s easy to understand by relying on the data an infotainment system collects, and that’s one reason why this hack is successful.
Connectivity Vulnerability
Multiple security vulnerabilities are exploited in this hack. The flaws are specifically found in the Connectivity Master Unit, or CMU. Mazda says their CMU “controls the entire system.” A smartphone’s entire contents, voice recognition, driving locations, and payment methods aren’t unusual for infotainment systems to hold. Hackers and other bad actors love abusing these types of data and a reason this hack is so popular.
Unlike a lot of hacks we hear about, this one can’t be done wirelessly. For this one to work, someone needs physical access to the car so they can insert a malware-filled USB into one of the car’s ports. But don’t mislead yourself into thinking there’s nothing to worry about since you’re the only one with access to your car. Truth is, a mechanic, valet, detailer, or anyone else who has your wheels for a moment can start this hack’s engine.
Prevention Tips
Contact Mazda to check if a software patch has been released so you can apply it to your car’s infotainment system right away. The other is being careful about whom you’re handing your car over to, even for a moment. Consider parking your car yourself rather than handing it over to valet, for example. Access to the infotainment system and the sensitive data it holds is something to protect with any type of car, whether it’s a Mazda or not. So, drive smart and safely enjoy your car’s infotainment system.
